Job description

Position Summary

The Janitor, under the direction of the Early Childhood Programs Manager and Health Coordinator, is responsible for performing a wide variety of janitorial services and tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Performs housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, dusting, moving furniture, window washing, etc.
  2. Maintains building carpets using carpet extraction equipment including pre-spotters, detergent, and biohazard kits as required.
  3. Maintains inventory of supplies needed to complete tasks and submits requests for supplies as needed to ensure supplies are well stocked and available.
  4. Reports obvious facility maintenance requirements to the department lead/supervisor.
  5. Performs minor groundskeeping duties when needed, including snow and ice removal and cleaning of walkways.
  6. Handles trash and material collection and disposal.
  7. Cleans upholstery, handles fire and smoke cleanup, and water-damaged flooring and furniture.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Evacuates children during emergency and monthly drills.
  2. Follows OSHA and Tribal policies and procedures at all times.
  3. Maintains MSDS sheet updates.
  4. Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions.
  5. Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

This position involves heavy physical activity, including lifting up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, and various physical movements such as standing, walking, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, manual handling, bending, sitting, and crawling. Working conditions may include exposure to weather, extreme temperatures, wet/humidity, noise, and potential hazards like moving mechanical parts, electric shock, chemicals, infectious agents, needles/syringes, and insecticides/pesticides. Must obtain an annual TB test and be in good physical health. Protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and hazard kits are required.

Requirements
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years janitorial experience required.
  • Certification/License: Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within 1 year of hire. Must pass background check and pre-employment drug testing. Maintain good moral character.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of OSHA standards, safety procedures, infection control, biohazard, fire extinguisher use, operation of cleaning equipment, effective communication, and ability to perform minor repairs. Ability to meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and interact appropriately with children and elderly clients. Native American preferred.
