Govt. Early Childhood Education - Bus Driver

Position Summary

The Bus Driver, under the direction of the Education and Disabilities Supervisor, is responsible for providing children safe and secure transportation to and from school and on field trips, in accordance with Federal, State, and Tribal regulations.

Essential Functions
  1. Schedule a safe and efficient bus route.
  2. Transport children to and from school and occasional field trips.
  3. Keep bus clean and well maintained.
  4. Plan and implement emergency bus evacuation drills with children, staff, and families.
  5. Maintain detailed trip and maintenance reports.
  6. Maintain up-to-date emergency medical contact information for each child.
  7. Follow all Federal, State, and Tribal transportation regulations.
  8. Maintain detailed and accurate logs of mileage, gas usage, maintenance, cleaning, etc.
  9. Responsible for the location and proper use of all safety devices such as flares, triangles, seat belt cutters, etc.
  10. Stay up-to-date and aware of all traffic situations and weather conditions.
  11. Assess weather conditions daily.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Evacuate children during emergency and monthly drills.
  2. Assist Cook when not en route.
  3. Monitor and direct Bus Aides while en route.
  4. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

The role involves heavy physical activity, including lifting up to 100 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. It requires constant use of senses like hearing, smell, vision, and depth perception, along with driving. Physical activities include walking, sitting, reaching, handling items, bending, standing, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and typing. Working conditions include exposure to weather, vibration, air quality, and potential hazards like moving mechanical parts, client contact, electric shock, chemicals, and infectious materials. Must be in good physical health, with annual TB testing required.

Requirements
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of experience preferred.
  • CDL driver's license with P&S Endorsements or ability to obtain within two weeks of hire.
  • Maintain State of Michigan Bus Drivers Certifications.
  • Obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within one year of hire.
  • Pass a background check and drug testing.
  • Valid driver's license and insurability by Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent customer service skills, positive attitude, effective communication, ability to teach safety standards, understanding of Ojibwa Culture and Language preferred, flexibility in work schedule, and maintaining confidentiality. Native American candidates preferred.
