Job summary

Meijer offers an 11-week internship program focused on Government Affairs, delivering real-world policy experiences and interaction with Meijer senior leaders. The role emphasizes research, advocacy, and cross-functional collaboration with Meijer Communications to amplify brand messaging.

The program includes challenging projects, final presentations to executives, executive speaker series, training opportunities, and networking events across Meijer’s footprint in Michigan and beyond.

Qualifications

• Undergrad or recent grad in Political Science, Pre-Law or related field.
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong writing, research and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct in-depth research on Government Affairs topics to develop a final presentation for executive leadership.
• Monitor and report on federal, state and local government activity relevant to Meijer and the retail industry.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to analyze business impacts of government policies for advocacy.
• Assist leaders in developing policy agendas and implementing strategies to achieve goals.
• Draft advocacy communications to government officials on legislation and regulation.
• Attend committee hearings and meetings with government officials as needed.
• Build relationships with elected officials and staff within the Meijer footprint.
• Participate in internal meetings and provide input on Meijer initiatives.
• Support special projects as assigned.

What you will be doing as a Government Affairs Intern

The Meijer Government Affairs Team's mission is to amplify Meijer's brand and values through issue advocacy, strategic partnerships and outreach, cross-functional collaboration, and policy development that best serves our customers and strengthens Meijer's competitiveness in a fast-paced business environment.

The Government Affairs Intern will learn from a variety of practical, real-world experiences including the following:

• Conducting in-depth research on specified Government Affairs topics/challenges/questions (TBD) to develop a final presentation for executive leadership.
• Monitoring, analyzing and reporting on federal, state and local executive, legislative and regulatory activity relevant to Meijer and the overall retail industry.
• Working with internal stakeholders to analyze business impacts and implications of various government policies to assist in advocacy efforts.
• Assisting Government Affairs leaders in developing policy agendas and engaging in implementing strategies to accomplish policy goals.
• Collaborating with Meijer Communications to ensure consistent messaging and brand amplification with government officials and strategic partners.
• Drafting advocacy communications to government officials on specific legislation and regulation.
• Attending committee hearings and meetings as needed with government officials across the Meijer footprint.
• Developing relationships with elected officials and government staff throughout the Meijer footprint.
• Attending and participating in internal meetings and provide input on various Meijer initiatives.
• Assisting with special projects.

The Government Affairs Intern may have the opportunity to participate in day-long business travel (i.e. Lansing, Meijer facility tours, etc.), and outside events (political events, conferences, etc.).

Qualifications

• Undergraduate student currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from a four-year college or university with an academic focus on Political Science, Pre-Law or adjacent field of study.
• Ability to thrive and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent writing, research and communication skills.
• Independent thinker, with strong critical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Self-starter, able to manage ambiguity and possessing courage to try new things.
• Capable of building new relationships and possessing emotional intelligence.
• Comfort in a corporate environment, including being amongst senior business executives.
• A passion to compete.
• Microsoft Office experience, with the flexibility and desire to learn additional technology skills for using varied systems and tools.
