Summary

Goodwill Store Associate may be trained on all non-management aspects of store operations. Under general supervision of the Store Manager or manager-in-charge, the Retail Store Associate is responsible for assisting in the overall store operations including receiving and processing donations from donors; completing sales transactions on the POS system; displaying items on and pulling items from the sales floor; and general maintenance and store operations to provide a safe, clean and welcoming environment for donors and shoppers.

Special Requirements

Will typically be required to work regular weekend (i.e., Saturday, Sunday), holiday, and evening hours customary to the retail trade.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Store Operations
  • Sort, price, and display quality merchandise for sale in the store. Meet quality and quantity production standards to maximize sales revenue.
  • Properly discard unsellable merchandise to appropriate containers, i.e., Outlet, Salvage, Trash, etc.
  • Maximize used goods processing through proper application of Goodwill techniques, including sorting, preparing, and pricing items for sale. Meet or exceed production goals regularly.
  • Follow store rotation schedule by completing pulls at scheduled times in assigned areas.
  • Ensure quality customer service is provided in a timely and courteous manner to all shoppers, donors, and employees. Be available for telephone customer relations activities.
  • Assist in maintaining store appearance, cleanliness, and shopping environment, including floors, fitting rooms, cash registers, aisles, trash, lighting, restrooms, showcases, and windows. Maintain an odor-free environment.
  • Assist with general light maintenance on immediate grounds such as building exterior and parking lot, including windows, doors, sidewalks, lights, dumpsters, landscaping, stray carts, signage.
Customer Service
  • Assist shoppers in locating and selecting merchandise.
  • Complete sales transactions accurately and promptly on the POS system.
  • Accept donations, greet donors at vehicles, assist in carrying donated items into the store, and always offer receipts.
  • Assist customers with large/heavy items post-sale as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate good judgment at cash wrap to protect assets like cash and jewelry.
Safety, Security, and Loss Prevention
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety, adhere to safety procedures.
  • Utilize designated staging areas, keep aisles clear, secure sharp objects, handle breakables carefully.
  • Use PPE when required.
  • Spread ice melt, shovel sidewalks, report theft or suspicious activity.
  • Assist with loading/unloading trucks and document shipments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred; 1-3 months related experience or training; or equivalent. Minors under 18 may be hired for part-time roles but with restrictions.

Skills
  • Ability to read, comprehend instructions, and communicate effectively.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Apply common sense to carry out instructions.
  • Operate material handling equipment.
Physical Demands

Regularly stand, handle, walk, reach, talk, hear; occasionally climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally; push heavy crates; assist customers with heavy items; specific vision abilities required.

PPE Requirements

Wear protective eyewear, gloves when handling certain equipment or materials, and follow safety protocols.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving parts, heights, fumes, chemicals, weather, electrical hazards; moderate noise level.
