Job summary

Eli Lilly and Company seeks an experienced patent attorney to provide strategic IP counsel for pharmaceutical products across discovery, development, and commercialization. The role collaborates with the Lilly Legal Patent team, project teams, and business leadership to protect assets and guide strategic decisions.

Candidates will lead patent strategy, drafting and prosecuting applications, and advising on exclusivity and freedom to operate while staying current on evolving global regulations.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree from an accredited U.S. institution.
• At least ten years of post-JD experience as a practicing patent attorney in a law firm or industry with strong patent strategy development.
• Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and registered before the USPTO; in good standing.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific field with communication familiarity to scientists and management.

Responsibilities

• Develop global patent strategies for pharmaceutical assets across discovery, development, manufacturing and beyond.
• Draft and prosecute patent applications in multiple jurisdictions and assess freedom to operate.
• Advise on exclusivity, patentability, freedom to operate, and risks with clear communication to stakeholders.
• Stay current on global laws, precedents, and regulations relevant to pharmaceutical products.
• Lead and manage projects; improve policies and procedures; mentor teams.
• Collaborate effectively across departments to support IP strategy and business goals.
