Job description

What You Will Do

A technically and programmatically experienced Program Manager is sought to lead Global Security (GS) Unclassified & Classified Computing Programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The role involves providing computing resources to a broad range of customers across GS programs and beyond, spanning multiple divisions, program offices, and external sponsors and customers.

  • Provide overall program direction and leadership, maintaining high‑level cognizance of all GS computing activities across all utilized networks.
  • Implement and oversee rigorous program management; track, forecast, and report progress on a routine basis; and use project controls to identify and mitigate program risk related to cost, scope, and schedule.
  • Effectively identify, manage, and mitigate risk related to the complex security envelope inherent to GS computing programs; navigate evolving security policies and processes in collaboration with the LANL Chief Information Office (CIO) and other stakeholders.
  • Support GS computing infrastructure, including compute, storage, container and virtualization services, applications, license management, Help Desk, and testbed development at Unclassified level and migration to Classified level.
  • Lead R&D initiatives, architecture and design of end‑to‑end special applications and systems, and maintain subcontracts and procurements in collaboration with others.
  • Foster a respectful work environment, encourage continuous learning, and treat failure as a learning tool.
What You Need
  • Project and Program Management: Substantial experience leading complex projects with strict deadlines; success as a project leader, principal investigator, or task leader; experience with institutional planning, strategic planning, and infrastructure investments.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency with complex computing programs, environments, and architectures; experience managing computing environments at a large R&D scale.
  • Heterogeneous Computing Environment Expertise: Proficiency in configuration management, platform engineering, storage engineering, security infrastructure, application development, continuous monitoring, networking, compute and data center design, commercial licensing, and software support.
  • Risk Management: Familiarity with risk‑management frameworks and LANL’s cybersecurity approach.
  • Institutional Awareness: Expertise or ability to learn LANL budgeting and acquisition systems and associated funding policies.
  • Relationship‑Building and Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills and consultative experience developing high‑level internal and external customer relationships.
  • Teaming and Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, creative problem solving, and ability to lead and influence internal and external collaborations.
  • Clearance: Active Q‑clearance or ability to obtain a DOE‑Q Clearance is required.
Education/Experience

Position requires a bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is typically expected.

  • Substantial experience with space‑based and remote‑sensing instrumentation systems
  • Experience interacting directly with LANL sponsors and GS mission stakeholders
  • Knowledge of Human Performance Improvement and SCoR principles implementation
Essential Job Functions
  • Sitting and standing: Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods; sitting may exceed 50% of the workday.
  • Mobility: Ability to walk at least 0.25 mile continuously and up/down three flights of stairs.
  • Lifting: Ability to occasionally lift or carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity: Performing repetitive motions with hands and fingers (typing, using keyboard, mouse, and office machinery).
  • Vision: Close visual acuity needed for reading, analyzing data, and viewing a computer screen.
  • Communication: Ability to speak and hear clearly to exchange information with others.
Work Environment
  • Work Location: Onsite in Los Alamos, NM.
  • Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs. The commitment for this position is one year.
