Job summary

Northeastern University seeks a Vice Provost for Research Development (VPRD) to lead the research development enterprise and advance strategic funding goals. The role partners with senior leadership to optimize staffing, systems, and programs for competitive submissions and diversified funding sources.

The VPRD will build faculty coalitions, supervise a high‑performing team, and represent the university at meetings and events, including international collaborations in London and Dublin.

Qualifications

• PhD or terminal degree in a relevant field; exceptional cases considered with a strong senior track record.
• Experience in research development at a research university with success in large, competitive grants.
• 5–7 years of progressively responsible leadership in a university research environment.
• Knowledge of the federal and private funding landscape and major sponsor priorities.
• Ability to build faculty coalitions and lead multi-investigator proposal efforts.
• Strong management skills and experience setting workloads and metrics.
• Excellent communication and networking skills across a complex environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic research development growth aligned with university funding goals.
• Build networks across the university to scale the research enterprise.
• Coordinate large, multi‑investigator proposals and center grants.
• Monitor funding trends and translate intelligence into opportunities for faculty.
• Manage systems, dashboards, and reporting for proposal development and post‑award work.
• Oversee staff performance, reviews, and resource allocation.
• Represent the SVPR and university at meetings and events.
