Job description

Overview

This position will serve as LyondellBasell’s subject matter expert for Partial Oxidation units. It will be part of the Global Process Engineering group and located at the LaPorte Syngas/MeOH plant. The role requires interaction with operations, technical, safety, maintenance, and reliability teams to drive overall improvements in unit performance.

The position will lead the design and installation of long‑term projects to overcome process constraints, resolve reliability issues, and comply with environmental regulations. Responsibilities include defining scope, front‑end loading, and incorporating process knowledge during engineering phases. The role will mentor less experienced engineers and advise on initiatives to maintain a competitive advantage.

A Day in the Life

• Collaborate with operations to identify new opportunities to remove constraints, maximize stream time and profitability while ensuring safe, environmentally compliant, reliable operation.
• Analyze complex operating issues and provide recommendations to improve performance.
• Support gap closure and continuous improvement activities by providing technical expertise, engineering calculations, and justification for capital and expense projects.
• Lead capital, expense, and special project scope development, execution, and support.
• Provide technical expertise during troubleshooting, turnarounds, startups, shutdowns, catalyst changes, and other non‑routine unit activities.

You Bring This Value

Education

• B.S. or higher degree in chemical engineering or related field.

Work Experience

• 10 or more years of experience in manufacturing with a background in partial oxidation and syngas‑methanol production.

Area of Expertise, Requirements

• Mastery of technical understanding of unit processes and application of unit operations principles such as mass and energy balances, fluids, thermodynamics, mass and heat transfer, and distillation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams and interact with all levels of the organization.
• Strong process troubleshooting ability and knowledge of tools and resources to perform activities.
• Innovative thinking to solve complex issues.
• Self‑motivation and high initiative.
• Strong understanding of creating and implementing capital and expense projects.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor and coach technical and operations team members.

Languages

Fluent in written and spoken English.

Other Skills

• Proficient in process modeling software.
