Job summary

Helen Keller Intl invites a General Counsel to lead its global legal function, reporting to the CEO, with no direct reports. The role emphasizes governance, compliance, and strategic counsel for a major international NGO focused on public health.

The successful candidate will manage external counsel, budgets, and cross-border regulatory risk, while advising senior leadership in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

• JD or equivalent law degree and admission to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction (preferably New York).
• Minimum of 10 years of legal experience, nonprofit, international NGO, or mission-driven sector valued.
• Strong generalist legal background with judgment to advise across a broad range of legal matters.
• Experience building, leading, or advising on enterprise risk management and nonprofit governance, tax-exempt law.
• Experience advising a global or multi-country organization with cross-jurisdictional issues.
• Fluency in English; French or another language relevant to the organization’s operations.

Responsibilities

• Directs the organization’s legal function across global nonprofit matters.
• Advises the CEO and senior leaders on legal matters and strategy.
• Manages external counsel, budgets, and relationships with pro bono and paid counsel.
• Oversees corporate governance, board support, and compliance across geographies.
• Provides practical guidance on employment, contracts, data protection, and risk management.
• Monitors applicable law developments and ensures ongoing regulatory compliance.
