Position Overview

The Global Education Office (GEO) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is seeking an innovative and student-focused leader to join our team as the Global Learning Assistant Director! This is a unique opportunity for a globally minded professional to shape meaningful international experiences, support student success, and contribute to a vibrant, collaborative campus community. The Global Learning Assistant Director plays a key leadership role in expanding access to transformative global education experiences at VCU. Reporting to the Director of Global Learning, this position leads global student engagement initiatives and directly supervises the Global Learning Specialist.

The Assistant Director oversees a wide range of programs and services that support international student success and promote global awareness across the student body. This includes academic and cultural advising, orientation, and coordination with campus and community resources (e.g., housing, health, and legal services) to ensure a smooth transition and integration into university life.

In addition to student support, the Assistant Director contributes to strategic planning, program development, and assessment efforts. The role requires strong collaboration across departments and a commitment to inclusive advising, intercultural engagement, and high-impact global learning practices.

Typical Duties

Responsibilities of the Global Learning Assistant Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and support international student programs and services—including orientation, housing, health insurance, academic support, and ongoing engagement—in collaboration with the Global Learning Specialist.
  • Provide academic advising and success coaching for international students, including English Language Program (ELP) participants and those on academic warning or probation, using proactive advising, goal-setting, and referrals to university resources. Collaborate with academic and student support units to promote smooth transitions, well-being, and retention.
  • Lead campus-based and virtual global learning initiatives that connect international and domestic students, such as the reimagined VCU Globe program, Global Zone trainings, Globe first-year residential village, Peace Corps Prep, speaker series, student retreats, domestic travel programs, and other co-curricular intercultural activities. May include the opportunity to teach a section of UNIV 191: Maximizing Your Global Learning.
  • Support the development and lead the implementation of custom, short-term inbound programs in partnership with GEO’s Global Partnerships team, ensuring a welcoming, well-organized, and culturally enriching experience for visiting groups.
  • Manage systems and processes related to education abroad course evaluation, credit mapping, and transcript processing to ensure accurate academic credit and integration of global coursework.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional experience in international education, student advising, student services, or a related area.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and ability to work effectively with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in student advising or customer service requiring a high level of professionalism, diplomacy, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and public communication skills, including experience presenting to small and large groups.
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency in database and application systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals across various backgrounds and within a collaborative team setting.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally, regionally, and internationally as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience designing, managing, or leading co-curricular or academic programs Supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Advising or counseling students on academic planning or global learning opportunities.
  • Familiarity with international student services and global education programs in higher education.
  • Experience with assessment, evaluation, and learning outcomes.
  • International experience (e.g., living, working, or studying abroad) and/or proficiency in a second language.
  • Knowledge of academic programs, student services, and international initiatives at large, urban, research institutions (e.g., VCU).
  • Proficiency with platforms such as TerraDotta, ImageNow, Navigate 360, Canvas, or similar CRM/LMS/student systems.
  • Strong skills in research, data analysis, reporting, and budget/resource management.
  • Experience in marketing, recruitment, or outreach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently, maintain organized records, and ensure compliance.
  • Commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive environments for students, faculty, and staff.
