The traineeship runs from January 2027 through June 2028, with monthly stipends ranging from 2,196 to 2,473 euros depending on your progression through the program.

Program Structure and Learning Experience

The DW Traineeship offers a dynamic mix of seminars, workshops, and practical newsroom placements, ensuring trainees gain real-world skills across multiple media platforms.

Participants attend focused workshops on modern journalism, including:

  • Multimedia storytelling
  • TV and radio moderation
  • Data journalism and fact-checking
  • Social media production
  • Working with AI tools and digital newsrooms
2. Editorial Placements (Approx. 9 months)

Trainees rotate through different editorial departments in Bonn and Berlin, gaining hands-on experience in daily news production and multimedia content creation.

Selected participants can work at DW’s international correspondent offices, such as in Washington, Brussels, Delhi, or Jakarta, allowing global exposure to international journalism practices.

The final phase may include an optional internship with a partner broadcaster or another external media organization of the trainee’s choice.

DW broadcasts in more than 30 languages, and trainees may work in one or more of the following:
Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Dari, English, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Kiswahili, Macedonian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu.

Eligibility Criteria

The DW Traineeship 2026 is open to applicants from all nationalities and academic backgrounds.

Basic Requirements:

  • A university degree, apprenticeship, or journalism school qualification (completed before the start date).
  • Prior journalism experience is helpful but not mandatory.
  • Career changers from fields like IT, law, science, or business are welcome if they demonstrate strong motivation for journalism.
