Job summary

OpenAI, Inc. seeks an Infrastructure Operations & Sustainability Lead to shape and drive the sustainability strategy for its global compute infrastructure.

This senior role will translate environmental priorities into actionable requirements across site selection, design, construction, procurement, and operations, while ensuring reliability, speed, and scalability. You will build governance, metrics, and programs, partner with diverse teams, and influence executive decisions.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of experience in sustainability, infrastructure operations, environmental strategy or related field.
• Experience leading sustainability programs across a large, distributed organization.
• Ability to translate environmental objectives into practical engineering, procurement, construction, and operational requirements.
• Strong understanding of carbon, water, materials, waste, circularity, and lifecycle considerations.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive sustainability strategy for OpenAI’s global compute infrastructure.
• Translate sustainability objectives into requirements for site selection, design, construction, procurement, commissioning, and operations.
• Establish decision frameworks balancing environmental impact with reliability, speed, cost, and scalability.
• Develop strategies addressing embodied-carbon, water stewardship, materials, construction impacts, and equipment lifecycle management.
• Partner with engineering and operations teams to identify practical improvements in efficiency and resilience.
• Incorporate sustainability into self-build, colocation, cloud, and partner decisions.
• Establish measurable goals, dashboards, and governance for sustainability programs.
• Improve data quality, consistency, and auditability across internal teams and external partners.
• Develop supplier requirements and lifecycle strategies for infrastructure equipment.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and determine which should scale from pilots to deployment.
• Develop business cases communicating environmental impact, cost, and tradeoffs.
• Collaborate with Public Policy on sustainability positions and external engagement.
• Represent OpenAI with partners, industry groups, policymakers, and stakeholders.
