Human Rights Watch seeks a strategic Chief Development Officer to lead global fundraising, donor engagement, and marketing efforts. report to the Executive Director and guide a 110-person Development & Outreach team across leadership gifts, foundations, and communications.

Qualifications

  • At least 12–15 years in fundraising with senior leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to lead global fundraising operations and build donor programs.
  • Strong track record in major gifts, foundations, and planned giving.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the organization’s multi-year fundraising strategy and revenue growth.
  • Develop and implement compelling campaigns to inspire donors and partners.
  • Provide strategic direction across fundraising activities including leadership gifts and marketing.
  • Represent HRW to donors, prospects, and the Council to grow support.
  • Set and meet fundraising objectives and optimize strategy based on data and results.
  • Develop funding proposals to engage top-tier donors for transformational gifts.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within the team and donor relationships.
  • Determine investments in development, budgets, and data-driven revenue growth.
  • Collaborate with the organization to align development with priorities.
  • Support and amplify fundraising efforts of the Executive Director and leadership.
  • Strengthen Board engagement and stewardship in consultation with leadership.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team and foster a positive work environment.
  • Foster an inclusive culture and proactively address bias.
  • Perform other tasks as needed.
