Job summary

Freedom House is seeking a Senior Director of Communications to lead an integrated communications function that translates research and frontline work into public pressure, audience growth, and donor engagement.

The role oversees earned media, owned channels, digital content, and executive voice, reporting to executive leadership and serving as a cabinet member. Hybrid work in Washington, DC is expected with a strategic, digital-first approach.

Qualifications

• Experience leading communications in a mission-driven, policy, advocacy, or journalism environment.
• Strong grounding in foreign policy, democracy, human rights, or international affairs.
• Ability to turn complex research, policy, or programmatic work into clear public narratives and campaigns.
• Experience managing staff, editorial calendars, and multi-channel campaigns.
• Proven track record in donor-facing communications and digital storytelling.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead an integrated communications strategy aligned with institutional priorities, fundraising goals, advocacy objectives, and audience growth.
• Lead owned channels, digital content, email, website strategy, and donor communications.
• Guide executive communications and donor-facing messaging for key institutional moments.
• Build relationships with journalists, editors, and media platforms; oversee proactive media outreach.
• Manage the communications team, set priorities, and oversee calendars and campaigns.
