Job description

Purpose of Position

The glass machinist will plan, set up, program and operate machines to lightweight and measure high‑value hardware components primarily for optical applications. Operations include grinding, milling, light‑weighting, contouring, vent‑holing, and other precision machining to meet customer specifications.

Day To Day Responsibilities

• Interpret customer and Corning internal drawings/blueprints of glass parts (mirror or other) and determine the approach to meet specifications on 5‑axis CNC machines, 5‑axis AWJ machines, large Campbell grinders, Northwoods vent‑hole machines or similar equipment.
• Determine proper method and sequence to assemble and align workpiece support systems to specific tolerances.
• Determine optimum tooling, grits, speeds, feeds, and lead angles for machining, light‑weighting or contouring to ensure features and dimensions specified are met.
• Manage machine/process operations through the CNC controller and process control computer.
• Monitor, measure, and generate process performance metrics using handheld measurement tools and system‑generated data.
• Participate in writing, revising, and monitoring Standard Operating Procedures.

Education, Skills and Experience Preferred

• Graduate from SUNY Canton or another college with an A.A.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology, or graduate from a vocational/trade school or apprenticeship CNC machinist program, or possess equivalent machinist and CNC work experience.
• Ability to work in a team environment with engineering, technical, production, and project management personnel.

The starting pay for this position is $34.55 hourly rate. Compensation and benefits available for this position are dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
