Job description

Position: GIS Technician II - Norfolk Department of Utilities

The Norfolk Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician II to support our GIS team. The role involves daily input and manipulation of GIS data for the Engineering Department and assisting customers.

Essential Functions:
  1. Utilizes Raw Water, Water Distribution, Sewer Gravity, Sewer Force Main, and Sewer Pump Station As-Builts, along with GPS/Survey data, to record assets into the Utilities’ GIS Esri Enterprise geodatabase.
  2. Performs various GIS tasks related to data collection, maintenance, display, and analysis.
  3. Interacts with customers regarding water and sewer tap orders and records requests.
  4. Collaborates with employees, other City departments, and external customers.
  5. Reads and interprets City utility maps, plans, and technical documents.
  6. Creates, digitizes, edits, and prepares high-quality maps and exhibits for departmental, city council, interdepartmental, and public use.
  7. Prepares, revises, and maintains a variety of computer-generated maps and cartographic products using the Esri ArcGIS software suite.
  8. Assists with field investigations as needed.
  9. Creates, edits, and updates Geodatabases as required.
Qualifications:
  • Broad knowledge in a professional or technical field, normally acquired through a four-year college degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent).
  • Two years of experience in GIS.
  • One year of experience creating and editing data in ArcGIS, drafting, surveying, sub-professional engineering, or a related field (preferred).
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to use a personal computer.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Work Details:

Location: 500 E. Main Street, 7th Floor, Norfolk, VA 23510

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (up to two days remote work with supervisor approval)

This position offers a $5,000 signing bonus.

This is an essential position, requiring potential work during extended hours, nights, weekends, or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
