Job summary

San Jose Water Company seeks a GIS Technician I to join our team in Silicon Valley. Under immediate supervision, you will perform entry-level GIS data entry, map creation, and GPS/GIS hardware support as part of our municipal water system operations.

A baccalaureate degree in a related field is required. Candidates should be able to read plans, interpret as-builts, troubleshoot software and hardware, and communicate clearly. Compensation is hourly with a comprehensive benefits package.

Position

Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty at the entry level in the utilization of geographic information system (GIS) software and global positioning system (GPS) software and hardware. Performs related work as required. No supervision over others required.

Typical Tasks

• Interprets recorded plans (as-builts) to enter graphic and attribute data into the GIS.
• Creates maps and other GIS-related products.
• Corrects errors with GIS data.
• Operates and maintains various types of GIS hardware including plotters and workstations.
• Troubleshoots and resolves different software and hardware issues.

Education/Experience

A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Urban Planning, or a closely related field.

• Experience with geographic information system software.
• Ability to think logically and follow detailed instructions.
