Job summary

York County, VA is seeking an individual to perform technical field and office support for the GIS data collection project within the Information Technology Department. Responsibilities include field data collection at hotels, hospitals, and multi-unit facilities to verify and document room and sub-address information.

The role requires interpreting maps and floor plans, updating GIS data in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, and performing QA checks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience using computers, tablets, or other digital devices is required.
  • GIS/Geography-related coursework or related field preferred.
  • Virginia driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field data collection at hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities and other multi-unit buildings to verify and document room and sub-address information.
  • Interpret floor plans, maps, and reference materials to identify and verify building layouts and address information.
  • Mark up paper floor plans/maps to document corrections for GIS integration.
  • Enter, update, and verify spatial and attribute data using GIS software and web-based maps (ArcGIS Online).
  • Conduct quality control checks for data accuracy and completeness.
  • Use tablets or other devices to collect and update information in ArcGIS Online.
  • Communicate professionally with facility representatives to coordinate field visits.
  • Help organize field documentation and project records.
  • Maintain County equipment used in fieldwork (tablets, accessories).
  • Travel to project sites throughout York County using County vehicles.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions.

Job description

Performs technical field and office support work for the Information Technology Department in support of a Geographic Information System (GIS) data collection project.

Responsibilities
  • Performs field data collection at hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and other multi-unit buildings to verify and document room and sub-address information.
  • Interprets floor plans, maps, and other reference materials to identify and verify building layouts and address information.
  • Marks up paper copies of floor plans and maps to document corrections and updates for incorporation into the County's Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Enters, updates, and verifies spatial and attribute data using GIS software and web-based mapping applications.
  • Performs quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and completeness of collected data.
  • Uses tablets or other digital devices to collect, verify, and update information in ArcGIS Online (AGOL) web applications.
  • Communicates professionally with representatives of participating facilities to obtain information and coordinate field visits.
  • Assists with organizing and maintaining field documentation and project records.
  • Maintains County equipment assigned for field work, including tablets and related accessories.
  • Operates County vehicles to travel to assigned project sites throughout York County.
  • Participates in team meetings, training sessions, and departmental initiatives.
Education and Experience

High school graduate or equivalent; current enrollment in a college or university program is preferred. Experience using computers, tablets, or other digital devices is required. Coursework or experience in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ArcGIS Pro, Computer Science, Engineering, Planning, or a related field is preferred. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Ability to safely navigate multi-story occupied buildings, including frequent walking and stair climbing.
  • Proficiency using computers, tablets, Microsoft Office applications, and other digital tools.
  • Must be physically able to operate computers, tablets, and other electronic devices.
  • Work requires a combination of office and field activities, including frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, and traveling to facilities throughout the County.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual acuity is required to interpret maps, floor plans, and digital displays.
Physical Demands

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, tablets, printers, copiers, facsimiles, and other mobile devices. Must be able to walk, stand, climb stairs, and occasionally lift field equipment or materials weighing up to 25 pounds as needed. Physical demand requirements are for those of Moderately Active Work.
