Job summary

ESS Companies (ESSC) is seeking a motivated GIS Intern to gain hands-on experience supporting GIS operations in a construction and engineering setting. You will work with experienced GIS professionals to maintain data, collect field information, and support CAD workflows.

The role emphasizes learning GIS techniques, data management, and project coordination while ensuring safety during field tasks and collaborating with engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in GIS, Geography, Engineering, or a related program.
• Strong work ethic and willingness to learn new technical systems.
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
• Basic familiarity with ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Pro is a plus but not required.
• Comfortable using computers and mobile data collection tools; some fieldwork may be required.
• Punctuality and reliability are essential.

Responsibilities

• Support GIS Operations: help maintain data in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro under supervision.
• Field data collection: assist with collecting spatial information using mobile GIS apps.
• Data entry & maintenance: update and organize geospatial datasets for data integrity.
• Assist GIS–CAD workflows: align GIS data with CAD drawings used by teams.
• Documentation: create and update process docs, maps, and reference materials.
• Team collaboration: work with engineering, construction, and field crews to meet spatial needs.
• Safety: adhere to safety protocols during field data collection or site visits.
• Skills development: seize learning opportunities to grow GIS, analysis, and coordination skills.
