Classification Title: GIS/CAD Technician
Classification Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization or an equivalent combination of education and experience. GIS or AutoCAD proficiency required, per the unit's needs.
Conducts field data collection and verification activities utilizing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/drones), ground penetrating radar (GPR), GPS, LiDAR, utility locating equipment, and other geospatial and remote sensing technologies. Plans and conducts UAS operations for aerial imagery, photogrammetry, mapping, construction documentation, facility and infrastructure assessments, and other approved University applications. Performs GPS investigations to identify, locate, and document underground utilities, infrastructure, and other subsurface features. Conducts field validations and physical measurements to ensure accurate records of existing conditions and construction activities. Maintains appropriate field, equipment, safety, and UAS flight documentation and performs operations in accordance with applicable FAA regulations, University policies, and established safety procedures.
Processes and analyzes data collected through UAS/drone, GPR, GPS, LiDAR, and other field technologies for incorporation into the University's GIS and facilities information systems. Develops aerial imagery, Orthomosaics, point clouds, maps, drawings, and other geospatial products to support University planning, design, construction, operations, and facilities management activities. Creates and maintains web maps, applications, online services, dashboards, and other GIS deliverables utilizing Esri desktop and web-based tools. Coordinates with customers and University stakeholders to determine, document, and validate project requirements, deliverables, goals, and objectives.
As part of the Space and GIS team, this role supports the University's GIS infrastructure, including the campus basemap, facilities, land, master planning, and utility infrastructure datasets. Compiles, interprets, and incorporates information from a variety of sources, including field-collected data, aerial imagery, photogrammetry, LiDAR, GPR, GIS, surveys, as-built documentation, construction drawings, sketches, and other records into the GIS enterprise and CAD environments. Performs quality control and quality assurance of GIS, CAD, and field-collected data and compares information from multiple sources to verify accuracy. Reads and interprets surveys, construction documents, utility records, maps, and technical drawings.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm.
This position may occasionally require work outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends, to support UAS/Drone operations, field data collection, project or operational requirements, and activities that are dependent upon weather, site access, airspace restrictions, campus activity, safety considerations, or other time-sensitive conditions; total hours per week = 40
$28.00 to $30.00 Hourly
A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization or an equivalent combination of education and experience. GIS or AutoCAD proficiency required, per the unit's needs.
Prefer Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geomatics, Surveying, Engineering, Construction, or a related field. Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and demonstrated experience in conducting UAS/drone operations, including flight planning, aerial data acquisition, and safe operation in complex environments. Experience with UAS-based photogrammetry and processing aerial imagery to develop orthomoasics, point clouds, 3D models, digital elevation products, and other geospatial deliverables.
Experience operating LiDAR, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and other utility locating technologies for the identification and documentation of underground infrastructure.
Proficiency with Esri products, with experience creating, editing, analyzing, and maintaining GIS data.
