Job Summary

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking to fill one full-time GIS Analyst / Research Analysis Specialist Senior position in St. Paul, MN. The DNR has a constitutional obligation to manage School Trust land assets and maximize revenue from Trust mineral resources, which comprise over 80% of the Trust Corp value. The DNR also provides factual statewide mineral information to support Executive and Legislative Branch decision making, including policies related to mineral exploration data, and cartographic production for the Aggregate Mapping Program.

This position exists to support these efforts through two key areas of responsibility: geospatial database stewardship for the Drill Core Library and historical mineral exploration data, and cartographic production for the Aggregate Mapping Program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as the database steward, responsible for managing, maintaining, and curating geospatial and tabular datasets related to the state's Drill Core Library and historical exploration records.
  • Serve as a cartographer for the Aggregate Mapping Program, applying advanced cartographic principles to produce high-quality maps that illustrate the distribution, extent, and potential of aggregate resources across Minnesota.
  • Synthesize spatial data, interpret geological survey information, and design maps that inform policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ensure the integrity, accessibility, and usability of geospatial data related to mineral resources while effectively communicating this information through high-quality cartographic products that supports the DNR's mission.

This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Cartography, GIS, or Statistical analysis or similar field.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Adobe Pro, and geospatial analysis. A master's degree in Cartography, GIS, or Statistical analysis or similar field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Experience in advanced statistical tools to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Knowledge of cartographic procedures, design, concepts and standards with experience in developing multicolor maps.
  • Knowledge of the Public Land Survey system.
  • Advanced experience with ArcPad, ArcGIS applications including Pro and Enterprise, Survey 123, file geodatabases, and GIS software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Strong communication and organization skills that permit production of timely and understandable technical reports and analyses.
  • Experience with computers, particularly with statistical analysis and cartographic packages.
  • Advanced experience with planning and designing of databases that best accommodate expression of data via appropriate computer-generated graphics and figures.
  • Skills in transforming complex technical language information into plain language for presentation to the public.
  • Ability to make major decisions affecting the overall direction of work, relating to GIS design, development and maintenance of spatial and tabular data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in cartography, GIS, or statistical analysis.
  • Three years of experience using GIS and graphing packages.
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate advanced GIS topics to lay audiences and assist colleagues in interpreting complex analysis and results.
  • Documented project leadership including project design and implementation to completion.
Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record.
