Job summary

Blue Origin's Emerging Systems is seeking a Mechanisms Engineer II to design, analyze, and qualify precision mechanical systems for the TeraWave constellation. You will contribute to gimbal assemblies, pointing mechanisms, and related hardware under mentorship from senior engineers.

This role offers hands-on spaceflight hardware experience, collaboration across engineering teams, and opportunities to grow in space mechanism design, verification, and production transition activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field.
• 2+ years of experience in mechanisms design for space, aerospace, or high-reliability applications.
• Exposure to design/analysis of gimbal assemblies or precision mechanical systems.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Creo/NX/SolidWorks); exposure to FEA tools (ANSYS/NASTRAN/Comsol).
• Foundational knowledge of mechanism kinematics, dynamics, and structural analysis.
• Familiarity with space qualification testing concepts (vibration, shock, thermal vacuum).
• Familiarity with bearing systems, drive trains, or precision actuators.
• Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Awareness of DFM and DFA principles.
• Eagerness to learn and collaborate.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop precision gimbal assemblies and pointing mechanisms for space-based optical terminals.
• Develop mechanism-level performance requirements, error budgets, and design margins across structural, thermal, and dynamic domains.
• Perform design trade studies and analyses for gimbal configurations with guidance from senior staff.
• Support mechanism qualification activities including testing in shock, vibration, and thermal vacuum environments.
• Prepare mechanism design documentation, analysis reports, and test procedures for senior review.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on mechanism integration, harness routing, and interface definition.
• Assist in production transition activities including tolerance analysis and DFM/DFA reviews.
• Explore motor/encoder selection and bearing strategies for space mechanisms.
