Job summary

BD is seeking an experienced engineer to drive design, development and integration of manufacturing equipment in a fast-paced medical technology environment. You will lead cross-functional teams to ensure high standards of quality, efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include leading automation concepts, selecting suppliers, managing FAT/SAT, and delivering projects on time and budget while advancing continuous improvement and process validation initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical/controls engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years in automation, procurement, assembly and packaging.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
  • Experience leading projects end to end is preferred.

Job Description

Partner With Cross-functional Teams To Ensure Equipment, Processes, And Products Are Designed, Delivered, And Operated To The Highest Standards Of Quality, Efficiency, Safety, And Compliance

  • Product Design: Ensure products are designed for efficient manufacturing, target cost of goods (COGS), and required quality standards.
  • Unit Quality: Ensure equipment design and manufacturing comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Production: Design equipment that supports efficient manufacturing, is easy to operate and maintain, and consistently achieves production targets.
  • Maintenance & Engineering: Maximize equipment uptime through reliable, maintainable designs and adherence to preventive maintenance practices.
  • Procurement & Suppliers: Ensure components meet quality and safety standards while remaining cost-effective and readily available.
  • Plant Quality: Monitor equipment performance to ensure products consistently meet quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Program Management: Deliver projects on time, within budget, and aligned with business requirements.
  • Finance: Support capital planning, forecasting, budgeting, and reporting activities.
Process & Equipment Design and Development
  • Lead the design and development of assembly, packaging, automation, inspection, and manufacturing equipment, including mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, vision, and software systems.
  • Convert product, process, quality, and capacity requirements into scalable equipment and automation solutions.
  • Create, review, and maintain User Requirement Specifications (URS) aligned with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, safety, and business needs.
  • Evaluate multiple design concepts by balancing risk, reliability, scalability, standardization, cost, and lifecycle impact.
  • Develop innovative automation and mechanical system concepts while incorporating industry trends and company standards.
  • Create, review, and approve equipment layouts, system architectures, 3D models, and engineering drawings.
  • Perform engineering analyses and simulations to validate and optimize designs.
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, machine safety evaluations, and FMEA activities.
  • Establish and verify relationships between Key Process Input Variables (KPIVs) and Key Process Output Variables (KPOVs).
  • Support Proof of Concept (POC) and Design of Experiments (DOE) activities to define process capability and operating windows.
  • Optimize equipment for manufacturability, ergonomics, maintainability, reliability, and overall cost of ownership.
  • Leverage production data to drive new equipment designs and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical and financial input for capital investment justifications and business cases.
Supplier & Capital Project Leadership
  • Lead equipment suppliers, system integrators, and external vendors throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Partner with Procurement on supplier selection, RFQs, technical evaluations, and risk assessments.
  • Define and manage supplier scope, costs, timelines, deliverables, and technical requirements.
  • Review and approve supplier-generated designs, schematics, software architecture, and safety systems.
  • Plan, witness, and approve Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Drive corrective actions, engineering changes, and supplier performance improvements.
  • Support contract execution, change management, and claims resolution.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key equipment manufacturers and technology partners.
Equipment Integration, Validation & Start-Up
  • Lead the integration of new equipment and processes into existing manufacturing operations.
  • Develop installation and integration plans, including site readiness, utilities, logistics, safety, and resource requirements.
  • Support Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and handover activities.
  • Execute equipment qualification, process verification, and validation activities in compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure validation protocols, reports, and documentation are completed and approved.
  • Manage start-up execution to ensure readiness of equipment, documentation, processes, materials, and personnel.
  • Develop training programs, standard work, and operational procedures before production handoff.
  • Minimize operational disruptions during equipment installation, upgrades, and software implementations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment, automation, and process issues using structured problem-solving methodologies.
Ramp-Up, Performance Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Provide technical leadership during production ramp-up to achieve performance, quality, and capacity targets.
  • Lead centerlining activities to stabilize and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Measure and analyze performance gaps against expected outcomes.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to improve long-term equipment performance and reliability.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance equipment design, validation strategies, and integration methods.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing, process optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Documentation, Training & Handover
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation for equipment, validation, maintenance, controls, and operating systems.
  • Support the creation of operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, maintenance plans, and standard work instructions.
  • Deliver training programs for operators, engineers, maintenance personnel, and quality teams.
  • Execute formal handover to Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality teams for long-term production support.
Compliance, Safety & Quality
  • Ensure all equipment, installations, and modifications comply with EHS requirements, machine safety standards, and company policies.
  • Maintain compliance with GMP, ISO, FDA, and Quality System requirements throughout design, validation, and production.
  • Support internal and external audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Champion a strong culture of safety, quality, and regulatory excellence across all project phases.
Leadership, Mentoring & Collaboration
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to engineers and project team members.
  • Lead technical decision-making and collaboration across global, cross-functional teams.
  • Support global standardization initiatives, best practice sharing, and knowledge transfer across manufacturing sites.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering or related field, or relevant equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years in automation / procurement and assembly and packaging experience
  • Experience leading projects end to end.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in SolidWorks or other 3d modeling software
  • Previous experience with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ISO standards and Lean Manufacturing concepts.
  • Experience in an FDA regulated quality environment
