Nicklaus Children's in Miami is seeking a GI Technician for a full-time, daytime role. You will assist with patient care activities, take vitals, and support GI, dermatology, and oncology procedures under RN supervision.

Qualifications

• Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT license within the State of Florida must be acquired within 1 year of hire and kept active.
• American Heart Association BLS must remain active throughout employment.
• Experience with GI procedures and EMR systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides support with vitals and assessments; informs RN of significant changes.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living including hygiene, nutrition and comfort.
• Keeps rooms and nursing station clean and well organized.
• Assists with high level disinfection of GI, dermatology, and oncology equipment.
• Sets up and turns over equipment for procedures with physicians.
• Performs Lactose tests and documents per policy.
• Coordinates maintenance and repair of critical GI equipment per guidelines.
• Orders OR and GI supplies including disinfectants, clips, forceps, and scope equipment.
• On-call for GI emergent cases 24 hours a day.
• Assists surgeons during GI bleeding control and other procedures.
• Greets patients and families, communicating hospital services and supporting care.
• Transports specimens to lab/pathology as directed by physicians.
• Transports patients for procedures and discharge.
• Restocks supplies and aids in room turnover and readiness.
• Performs additional tasks to support efficient practice and quality patient care.

Description

Job Summary

Responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe patient environment. Performs a hybrid role of nursing care which includes assisting with patient care activities such as taking vitals and assessment, and supporting GI, Dermatology, and Oncology procedures. Collaborates with the healthcare team and provides compassionate and empathic family-centered care for the patients and families. Works under the supervision of an RN and in accordance with the hospital policies and procedures.

Job Specific Duties

• Provides support with vitals and assessments; informs RN of significant changes. Assists patients with activities of daily living to include, personal hygiene, nutrition and comfort measures.
• Reviews assignments and ensures room are set up. Maintains a clean environment and maintains patient rooms and nursing station at all times.
• Follows clean contamination procedures for high level disinfection of critical GI, dermatology, and oncology equipment. Provides support to physicians with set-up, equipment, and turnover.
• Performs all Lactose tests according to Policy and Procedure and completes the required assessment and documentation according to procedures.
• Coordinates all maintenances and repair on critical equipment per manufacture recommendations and standard of care.
• Orders OR and GI supplies including, but not limited to, high level disinfectant, clips, forceps, and scope equipment.
• Responsible for 24 hour on-call assignments for all GI emergent cases.
• Assists surgeons in controlling GI bleeds (i.e. clipping, banding, etc.) in emergent and non-emergent cases.
• Greets and welcomes patients, families, and visitors; provides encouragement and comfort. Communicates NCHS services and delivers excellent and timely service and support.
• Ensures all specimens are transported to lab/pathology based on direction of physician.
• Assists with transporting patients for special procedures and completes transport of patient during discharge process.
• Restocks supplies such as gloves, gowns, linen, medical equipment, and assists with room preparation and turnover.
• Performs other assigned tasks to promote efficient practice operation and contributes to the provision of quality patient care and works to anticipate patient needs.

Qualifications

• Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT license within the State of Florida must be acquired within 1 year of hire date – must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• High school education or equivalent preferred.
• 1-3 years of GI experience highly preferred.
• SGNA Certification or Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) preferred.
• Able to be on-call for all GI emergent cases.
• Computer literate and experience with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred.
• Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate in a team environment.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to effectively work in a collaborative environment and follow the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Nursing Leader.
• Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, analytical thinking, and service excellence in practice.
