Job summary

Cooper University Health Care, a premier health system in New Jersey, seeks GI technicians for outpatient units Mt. Laurel and Willingboro. Responsibilities include preparing rooms, maintaining endoscopic equipment, and assisting with procedures.

Responsibilities

• Prepare rooms and equipment before endoscopic procedures and clean up and sterilize after procedures
• Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies for endoscopic procedure
• Ensure equipment functions properly
• Prepare waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites
• Maintain endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting and calibrating instruments
• Transport patients according to medical personnel instructions
• Assist physicians and nurses during endoscopic procedures
• Attend training as necessary to refresh skills
• Collect specimens from patients
• Collaborate with care providers regarding procedures and patient conditions
• Stay current on endoscopy developments by reading literature or participating in professional organizations
• Assist with Business Office Support duties and EPIC/front desk registration & copay collection

Short Description

Some of the primary duties that GI technicians perform include:

• GI Technicians prepare rooms and equipment before endoscopic procedures and clean up and sterilize after procedures
• Maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies for endoscopic procedure
• Ensuring equipment functions properly
• Preparing waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites
• Maintaining endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting and calibrating instruments according to manufacturer guidelines
• Transporting patients according to medical personnel instructions- Helping physicians and nurses perform endoscopic procedures
• Attending training as necessary to enhance or refresh skills
• Collecting specimens from patients
• Collaborating effectively with other care providers regarding procedures and patients' conditions
• Staying current on endoscopy developments by reading literature, speaking with colleagues or participating in professional organizations
• Assists with Business Office Support duties and will be trained to EPIC applications and front desk registration & copay collection

Overview

TheMt. Laurel and Willingborolocations are only outpatient units, whereas theSpecial Test Unit (STU), located on the sixth floor in the main hospital is an outpatient and inpatient unit. All are run by the hospital largely to serve diagnostic and therapeutic needs of the Gastroenterology Division.

The most common gastroenterology procedures are upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. In the pulmonary suite (STU only), endoscopy of the airway procedures is performed, and are commonly called bronchoscopy.

All units are staffed by surgical schedulers, patient service representatives, nurses, and GI technicians. Anesthesiology is present for all GI procedures.Nurses rotate between the admission (Pre op), procedure suites, recovery (PACU) and pre-admission testing. They must be familiar with all roles and procedures in the GI Unit.

Experience Required

• GI tech experience and/or patient care experience (medical assistant, patient care technician, etc.)
• Must have the ability to learn IDX and EPIC applications
• Strong customer service skills preferred, some desk duties required

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required

License/Certification Requirements

• Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support)

Special Requirements

• Rotating hours 7-3:30, 8:30-5, 8:30-7, plus On-Call Requirement

• Must be flexible for desk duties (if needed)
