Job summary

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIE) at the University of Maine invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Research Professor. Beginning January 1, 2027, you will lead the Accelerated Soil Stabilization (AS2) project, focusing on accelerated mineral carbonation for soil stabilization while teaching two courses per year in geotechnical engineering.

You will supervise students, develop testing methodologies, analyze data, and prepare scholarly outputs for sponsors

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field by the position start date.
• Demonstrated research experience in geotechnical engineering, soil stabilization, geomaterials, mineral carbonation, cementitious materials, or related processes.
• Evidence of ability to conduct and communicate high-quality research, including peer-reviewed publications, reports, or conference presentations.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, sponsors, and external partners.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to obtain and maintain authorization to access secured research sites as required.

Responsibilities

• Lead research activities for the AS2 project and supervise graduate and undergraduate students.
• Develop, evaluate, and document lab- and field-scale testing methodologies and analysis.
• Prepare scholarly outputs, reports, conference presentations, and sponsor materials.
• Teach two courses per academic year (one undergrad, one graduate) and mentor students.
• Contribute to external funding and pursue complementary research initiatives.
