Job description

Locations: New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Northern Virginia

Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) is seeking experienced Geotechnical Engineers with 4–8 years of professional experience to join our growing team. MRCE is a leading engineering consulting firm known for complex urban projects and innovative geotechnical solutions. Our engineers work on a wide range of challenging projects and collaborate closely with senior engineers and firm leadership.

At MRCE, we are committed to combining sound engineering judgment with advanced analysis and practical construction experience. This role offers continued technical growth, exposure to high-profile projects, and increasing responsibility in both design and field oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct site visits and perform available information research for new and ongoing projects
  • Plan and perform subsurface investigations, including:
  • Inspecting and logging borings
  • Field soil classifications
  • Test pits, cone penetration testing (CPT), and other field testing
  • Perform pre- and post-condition surveys of buildings and structures
  • Perform and oversee instrumentation monitoring for buildings, transit facilities, and infrastructure (e.g., seismographs, crack gauges)
  • Perform and/or oversee inspections for new foundation construction, including:
  • Deep and shallow foundations
  • Subgrade preparation
  • Support of excavation systems
  • Underpinning systems
  • Pile load testing
  • Interpret soil and rock testing data to define subsurface conditions and develop parameters for analysis and design
  • Assist in developing geotechnical models and subsurface profiles
  • Prepare daily field logs and communicate investigation or construction progress with project teams
  • Prepare and review inspection logs and reports for construction approval and code compliance
  • Assist in the preparation of geotechnical engineering and construction reports
  • Coordinate with project managers, senior engineers, and clients as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Travel Requirements
  • Local travel by public transportation or company vehicle for equipment transport
  • Occasional long-distance travel by air or train, including overnight stays
Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Navigate construction sites and office environments
  • Alternate between stationary work and active movement on job sites
  • Lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Climb ladders and stairs; stoop, kneel, and crouch to access instruments
  • Navigate uneven terrain and varying site conditions
  • Work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
  • Operate computers, tools, and specialized field instrumentation
  • Work in environments with varying noise levels
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program
  • Experience: 4–8 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or actively pursuing
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or Revit preferred
  • Experience with geotechnical software such as LPILE, A-Pile, Slope/W, Seep/W, Settle3D, WinStress, or similar programs preferred
  • Strong understanding of field investigations, construction monitoring, and geotechnical analysis
  • Willingness to spend time in the field on short- or long-term assignments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to professionally represent MRCE on job sites and with clients
  • Base Salary Range: $90,000 – $120,000, commensurate with experience, education, certifications, and market conditions
