Position Overview

Three Notch Group is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer I to support the preparation of high-quality, constructable engineering and design documents that contribute to successful project delivery. Working under the guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, this entry‑level role will assist with technical plans, reports, design and construction documents, studies, permits, cost estimates, and field activities while steadily developing technical proficiency and professional independence.

The ideal candidate is an early‑career engineer who is eager to apply classroom knowledge to real projects, collaborate with clients and internal teams, gain both office and field experience, and pursue continued professional development and engineering licensure.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist with client communication and attend client or public meetings as needed.
  • Use computer‑aided design tools and engineering software to prepare engineering plans, reports, design documents, and construction documents.
  • Visit project and construction sites to monitor progress, collect information, and support project requirements.
  • Contribute to project quality‑control activities and take responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of assigned work.
  • Define technical problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions under appropriate supervision.
  • Read and interpret engineering and construction documents, governmental regulations, technical procedures, and applicable design standards.
  • Assist with the preparation and modification of specifications, studies, permits, plans, reports, designs, quantity estimates, and construction cost estimates.
  • Prepare design computations and project deliverables under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, with increasing proficiency and independence.
  • Communicate with project managers and practice leaders regarding assignments, schedule milestones, budgets, and project status.
  • Manage time effectively to complete quality work within established project schedules and budgets.
  • Participate in assigned training, professional activities, software development, certifications, and other professional‑development opportunities.
  • Actively pursue Engineer‑in‑Training certification and eventual Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Follow established guidelines, company policies, and procedures and perform other duties as assigned.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means consistently producing accurate, well‑organized, and constructable engineering work while meeting assigned quality, schedule, and budget expectations. The Geotechnical Engineer I will communicate effectively with clients, project leaders, and team members; approach technical problems thoughtfully; and demonstrate accountability for assigned office and field responsibilities.

The successful candidate will steadily expand proficiency in geotechnical engineering principles, design software, technical documentation, field activities, and project‑delivery processes. They will actively pursue professional development and licensure while contributing positively to client relationships, teamwork, safety, and the continued growth of the practice.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with zero to two years of experience.
  • Engineer‑in‑Training certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D or related engineering software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to apply fundamental mathematical concepts, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic financial calculations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal, time‑management, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to perform essential engineering support duties in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods and to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, read, write, see, hear, and communicate as required for the role.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds or more and work extended hours when needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, work around loud construction‑site environments, and travel overnight occasionally.
