Overview

Geotechnical Engineer - Dynamic Earth at Dynamic Engineering Consultants, P.C. Dynamic Earth and Dynamic Survey are part of our family of companies. We have been a leader in land development consulting since 2004, with over 350 employees and 15 offices nationwide.

We serve Fortune 500 companies as well as independent owners and developers of all sizes, offering a comprehensive consulting experience that integrates design and permitting for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for subsurface investigations, engineering analyses and evaluations related to site development projects, forensic investigations, and support for design plans such as earth retaining structures, on-site wastewater treatment and disposal, and foundation underpinning. Responsibilities may also include construction phase testing and inspections.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and complex field exploration programs for a wide range of project types.
  • Efficiently communicate field investigation instructions to drilling/subcontractors based on the project geotechnical scope.
  • Oversee engineering services during construction on projects involving shallow and deep foundations, support of excavations and earthwork operations.
  • Communicate field results during subsurface explorations with the project team and/or client as required.
  • Prepare field boring/test pit logs to document subsurface composition and groundwater levels.
  • Download field data and perform geotechnical engineering analyses to develop design recommendations and development considerations.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing programs based on field results.
  • Prepare construction phase inspection data reports with engineering observations and test results for review by project managers and supervisors.
  • Prepare initial geotechnical engineering reports with field investigation data and engineering analysis for review by project managers and supervisors.
  • Review project documents to identify geotechnical considerations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Soil Science, Geology or related field; geotechnical engineering concentration preferred.
  • 0-3 years’ experience in geotechnical consulting, construction material inspections or laboratory testing. Beneficial experience includes classifying soils, directing subsurface explorations, laboratory testing, and data compilation.
  • 0-3 years’ experience in construction phase testing and inspection (subgrade prep, foundation inspection, fill testing, retaining wall construction oversight, soil stabilization oversight, concrete sampling/testing, reinforcing steel inspection, daily report preparation).
  • Ability to work outdoors and in an office setting.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred or ability to obtain EIT certificate.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to maintain and operate personal and/or company vehicle.
  • ACI concrete field-testing technician certificate, accredited construction inspection/materials testing certificates, OSHA 40/10, and/or APNGA gauge training preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with metric and English tools.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn software for entering field data, laboratory data, and timesheets; independent and critical thinker; self-starter capable of working independently and in a team.
  • Familiar with mapping websites for due diligence and site investigation; experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam or similar software; ability to use geotechnical software programs.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies and review professionals; knowledge of planning and zoning processes.
Physical Demands
  • The physical demands described are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Occasionally stand; sit; walk; climb; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; use hands to finger, grasp, or feel; reach with hands and arms; push or pull; talk and hear; use repetitive motions.
  • Lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, transcribe, view computer terminals, and read site plans.
Work Environment
  • Field inspections/visits may occur during early mornings or late evenings depending on project schedules.
  • Work may be indoors or outdoors; approximately 50 to 90 percent of time outdoors in varying weather and terrain.
  • Hazards may include proximity to moving equipment and vehicles, electrical exposure, scaffolding, high places, and exposure to heat/cold and chemicals.
