Geospatial Data Scientist (Research Fellow or Part-time Consultant)

Terrafuse is developing AI technology to accelerate climate and weather modeling, making it significantly faster and more affordable. Our solutions leverage climate science and machine learning expertise from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, supported by NSF, NASA, DoD, and Microsoft AI for Earth. Our goal is to create a Queryable Earth, integrating observation and climate data with AI for actionable insights.

We focus on wildfire and wind risk modeling. Our wildfire risk model has successfully predicted major fires like those in Los Angeles, aiding disaster response and risk assessment. Our clients include insurance companies, government agencies, and the renewable energy sector.

Role Overview

We seek a highly skilled Environmental Engineer or Data Scientist intern with expertise in environmental engineering, GIS, and data analysis. You will support projects using Python and ArcGIS to analyze environmental data and develop risk models.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Validate catastrophe risk models against environmental and client standards
  2. Analyze environmental datasets using Python and ArcGIS
  3. Create visualizations and maps for risk models
  4. Support reporting and presentations with data insights
Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of experience in software engineering, environmental engineering, data science, or related fields, including academic experience
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis and visualization
  • Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS, including spatial analysis and mapping
  • Knowledge of catastrophe risk model validation
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with machine learning models
  • Knowledge of cloud GIS solutions
  • Additional programming skills (R, QGIS)
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline
