Geospatial Analysts support DEHE programs and Alaska Native communities by managing geospatial data, performing mapping and analysis, and maintaining GIS infrastructure. They collaborate with project teams to deliver geospatial products that aid planning, engineering, construction, and operations. Responsibilities range from routine data tasks to advanced analysis, automation, data governance, and enterprise GIS administration, with opportunities to specialize in areas such as data management, scripting, and infrastructure management.
Geospatial Analyst I
Under close supervision, performs geospatial tasks including map creation, data editing, and dataset conversion, ingestion, and maintenance. Supports project teams by coordinating data needs, timelines, and basic deliverables. Collects and validates spatial and tabular data from field tools, GPS, imagery, CAD, and public datasets and applies established QA and QC procedures. Demonstrates solid knowledge of GIS concepts, projections, attribute management, and Alaska geospatial resources, with practical experience using field data collection tools. Produces clear cartographic products and simple dashboards using established symbology and layout standards. Performs basic spatial analysis such as overlays and proximity and summarizes results clearly. Supports basic field and web applications, assists with web maps and layers, and uses scripting to assist with geoprocessing tasks. Prepares straightforward documentation for technical and non‑technical audiences, participates in field work following safety practices, and stays aware of current GIS tools and methods.
Geospatial Analyst II
Under general supervision, applies spatial analysis methods and develops geospatial workflows that maintain and improve datasets, processes, and maps. Coordinates with project teams and stakeholders to ensure data requirements, documentation, and review cycles are met. Performs intermediate analyses including suitability, routing, change detection, interpolation, and basic spatial statistics and validates outputs with clear documentation. Produces high quality maps and dashboards and develops, configures, and supports field and web GIS applications. Designs and maintains geodatabases using naming conventions, domains, topology, and versioning. Builds data pipelines for recurring updates and publishing and automates common tasks. Supports alignment of data standards and sharing across programs and contributes to grant reporting and transparency efforts. Maintains training materials, provides coaching and workshops, plans field data collection missions, and evaluates new tools and methods to recommend workflow improvements.
Geospatial Analyst III
Under limited supervision, performs advanced GIS analysis, solution design, automation, and enterprise data management. Works with project teams and leadership to define geospatial approaches, data architecture needs, and long‑term workflows. Develops scripts and automated processes for geoprocessing and system integration and implements monitoring for data freshness, schema validation, and enterprise or cloud updates. Manages complex datasets, services, and integrations, administers ArcGIS Enterprise, and publishes and maintains enterprise web services and layers. Applies Alaska geospatial data to advanced modeling, hazard assessment, remote sensing, or infrastructure planning. Contributes to and leads development of data governance standards, data dictionaries, and enterprise patterns. Mentors staff, reviews work products, supports cross departmental integration with systems such as asset management and permitting, and leads evaluation and adoption of emerging geospatial tools and methods.
All Levels
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geomatics, geography, computer science, environmental science, natural resources, or related fields. Progressive professional work‑related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for college education.
Geospatial Analyst I
Non‑supervisory - Zero (0) to two (2) years of relevant GIS experience, including coursework, internships, or geospatial responsibilities as part of another position. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for experience.
Geospatial Analyst II
Non‑supervisory - Minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible GIS experience and demonstrated ability to perform work independently at the Level II scope. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for experience.
Geospatial Analyst III
Non‑supervisory - Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible GIS experience, including advanced analysis, automation, system integration, or enterprise GIS administration. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for experience.
