Job summary

The Geology Department at San Jose State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Geophysics beginning in August 2026. We seek a geophysicist with research interests in seismology, tectonics, geodynamics, and geophysical exploration, and who will teach undergraduate and graduate geophysics courses.

Qualifications

• PhD in Geology or related field by date of appointment.
• Evidence of established scholarly output and a robust research program in Geophysics.
• Demonstrated potential for and dedication to superior instruction and mentorship at undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations in education.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geophysics and related topics.
• Develop and pursue an active geophysics research program with internal and external funding.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
• Participate in MS Geology and Computational Geoscience programs as mentor, instructor, and committee member.
• Engage in shared governance and service within department, college, and university.
• Organize classes in Canvas LMS.
• Demonstrate inclusive teaching practices addressing diverse student needs.
