Job summary

VHB’s Geomatics Co-op in Watertown, MA offers students hands-on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The internship introduces you to field surveying, data collection, and the practical use of GPS and Total Stations while you work under experienced Land Surveyors.

Co-op terms run January through June 2027. The program emphasizes real-world experience, enabling you to explore geomatics disciplines, complete field notes, and contribute to boundary, topographic, and ALTA/NSPS

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related field.
  • Interest in field surveying and data collection.
  • Willingness to learn GPS and surveying equipment usage.

Responsibilities

  • Perform land surveying tasks under supervision of senior Land Surveyors.
  • Transport and set up Total Stations, Data Collectors, and GPS devices.
  • Reconnaissance and recovery of surveying markers using tools and manual methods.
  • Carry out construction stakeout and document field work with notes.
  • Maintain survey equipment and assist with data organization.
  • Possess valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally.

About the Position

VHB’s Geomatics Co-op - Watertown, MA is designed to introduce students into the workforce. The program will build essential professional skills by offering opportunities for hands‑on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The intern program is designed to round out participants’ academic learning with real world experience and help them explore related areas of practice to find the best fit for their career path.

Co‑op terms generally run from January - June 2027.

Geomatics is a set of professional disciplines that relate to the collection, management, analysis, and delivery of spatial information. Built upon the scientific framework of geodesy, geomatics uses a wide range of technologies and techniques for data acquisition.

Responsibilities
  • Perform various land surveying tasks under the direction of more senior Land Surveyors including: Operation, transport and setup of Total Stations (Manual and Robotic), Data Collectors, GPS, and other Land Surveying equipment.
  • Reconnaissance and recovery of Land Surveying markers through use of hand tools, brush cutting, and digging.
  • Ability to transport Land Surveying Equipment, navigate and traverse through difficult terrain, environments and wooded areas.
  • Performs construction stakeout of proposed improvements, including the installation of stakes through use of sledgehammers and hand tools.
  • Maintains proper care of all survey equipment.
  • Requires valid Driver's license and ability to operate company vehicles, including large cargo vans.
  • Some overnight travel may be required from time to time due to workshare opportunities with other VHB offices.
  • Documents all phases of survey work through clear field notes and data collection
  • Land surveying including, but not limited to, Boundary, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, Existing Conditions & Topographic survey, Construction layout, and utility surveys.
Skills And Attributes
  • Ability to learn the proper use of GPS equipment and Manual and or Robotic Instruments. Ability to learn mathematical concepts such as the fundamentals of geometry
  • Understands the basics of Boundary Survey, Topographic, Construction, and Utility Surveys
  • Able to think critically
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with survey staff and clients
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related field

The hourly pay range for this position, located in Massachusetts, is $19 to $30. The actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on job‑related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted hourly range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
