Join Our Team as an Engineering Technician in our GeoMaterials Workgroup!

Join the dedicated team at NCDOT’s Materials and Tests Unit, where we ensure the highest quality of materials for roadway construction across North Carolina.

About Us

Our Unit is dedicated to establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products, ensuring they meet the highest standards and function as intended. We play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the North Carolina Highway System, in accordance with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Regulations.

Your Role

Although an entry level position, this role is crucial in ensuring the quality and compliance of soils and aggregates used in North Carolina's highway system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct tests on soil and aggregate to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Collect, analyze, compute, and process test data accurately.
  • Perform ongoing testing of soil and aggregate materials from quarries and projects within North Carolina’s highway system.
  • Maintain and ensure the cleanliness of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist the lead testing technician in upholding AASHTO Re:Source Accreditation Standards.
  • Collaborate with the GeoMaterial Engineer to troubleshoot and resolve soil and aggregate material performance issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must demonstrate experience in:

  • Engineering theories, practices, and procedures related to construction materials, sampling, and testing.
  • Using applicable software including Microsoft Office.
  • Coordinating and communicating effectively with team members.
  • Creating and maintaining routine records and reports.
  • Safely handling laboratory equipment.
Additional Expectations

This role requires a motivated individual capable of working independently and in a team, with strong work ethics, technical background, problem-solving skills, and effective communication skills. Must be able to lift samples and equipment up to 70 lbs, stand for long periods, and wear safety gear.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details. Trainee consideration possible if no qualified candidates are available, with salary adjustments upon qualification.
