Job summary

West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Geologist 2 in the Logan regional office. The position involves reviewing mining permits, evaluating geologic and hydrologic data, and preparing technical reports to ensure environmental protections are met.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Geology.
• Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in geology.
• Substitution: graduate study in Geology may substitute for the experience requirement; six semester hours or one year in specialization may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Review and evaluate geologic and hydrologic portions of mining permit applications to ensure technical and legal accuracy and completeness.
• Interpret data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for permit approval or denial; prepare cumulative hydrologic impact statements.
• Conduct field investigations as required; collect data and prepare technical reports.
• Justify conclusions in public hearings or in courts when required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
