Job summary

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Geologist 1 to perform professional geologic services in the Division of Mining and Reclamation; Permitting Unit, Logan regional office. Duties include reviewing mining permit applications for geologic and hydrologic components to ensure safety, legal compliance, and environmental protection.

Ideal candidates have a geology degree and can interpret data, conduct fieldwork, and prepare technical reports.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Geology.
Experience: None.
Six hours or one year of professional geologic experience in the areas of specialization may be required for certification.

Responsibilities

Review and evaluate geologic and hydrologic portions of mining permit applications to ensure technical and legal accuracy and completeness.
Interpret data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for approval or denial of permits; prepare cumulative hydrologic impact assessment statements.
Conduct field investigations as required and collect data for technical reports.
Justify conclusions in public hearings or courts as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
