Job summary

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land & Water, is seeking a Geologist 2 to join our Fairbanks team. This journey-level professional will apply geoscience and mining engineering knowledge to permit, monitor, and inspect mining activities across Alaska while enforcing state mining laws.

Responsibilities include reviewing APMA applications, establishing permit stipulations, assisting with mine plans of operations, and conducting field inspections with GPS/GIS mapping.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, mining engineering or subdivisions.
  • 1 year of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, mining engineering, etc.; this experience can be met by Geologist 1 status with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere.
  • Driver’s license required; valid license and ability to report to duty are required.
  • Substitution allows 24 graduate semester hours in geoscience fields and 24 in natural sciences to substitute for the education requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Permit, monitor, and inspect suction dredging, placer mining, and hardrock exploration activities.
  • Review Applications for Permits to Mine in Alaska (APMA) and establish permit stipulations.
  • Assist operators in developing complete mine plans of operations and reclaiming disturbed lands.
  • Conduct field inspections, map mine sites using GPS and GIS, and prepare inspection reports.
  • Provide technical information on mining laws, land status, reclamation standards, and mineral resources to the public and agencies.
