Job summary

The State of Iowa - Executive Branch is seeking a GIS Intern to support Iowa DOT GIS staff in central Iowa, Ames. The student will be onsite most of the time and actively enrolled in a 2- or 4-year program. Tasks include data collection, GIS data maintenance, and creating maps and dashboards.

Primary activities cover GPS data review, ArcGIS Pro training material development, and experimentation with FieldMaps, Survey123, and QuickCapture on iPad devices.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled student in a degree program at an accredited educational institution.

Responsibilities

• Review GPS tablet data for quality.
• Maintain GIS data, metadata, web-services and web-maps.
• Collect data using imagery of assets such as guardrail, attenuators.
• Assist with development of ArcGIS Pro desktop training materials and webinars.
• Develop and maintain paper map series for DOT staff.
• Create new databases and enter information from paper documents.
• Prepare new geodatabases for ESRI FieldMaps, Survey123, QuickCapture.
• Document and maintain records on data processing procedures.
• Conduct digital and paper document research.
• Collect field data using Survey123, FieldMaps, QuickCapture on an iPad.
• Develop ArcGIS Dashboards, StoryMaps, Experience Builder applications.
• Evaluate new tools for field data collection, analysis.
• Leverage Python or Arcade to support data processing and customization.

The GIS Staff At The Iowa DOT Support Multiple Efforts So a GIS Intern Will Directly Assist The GIS Staff As Needed With Ongoing GIS And Data Activities Potentially In The Following Areas

• Review and evaluation of GPS tablet data for quality
• Maintenance and development of the bureau-based GIS data, metadata, web-services and web-maps
• Collecting data using imagery of assets such as guardrail, attenuators, etc…
• Assisting with the development of basic ArcGIS Pro desktop, tablet training, webinar recording, and web map training materials
• Development and maintenance of paper map series for DOT staff
• Creating new databases and entering information from paper documents
• Preparation of new geodatabases for use with ESRI FieldMaps, Survey123, QuickCapture mobile applications
• Documenting and maintaining records on data processing procedures
• Conducting digital and paper document research
• Collecting field data using Survey123, FieldMaps, QuickCapture applications on an IPad
• Development of ArcGIS Dashboards, Storymaps, Experience Builder applications, etc.
• Evaluating new tools for field data collection, analysis, etc.
• Leveraging python or arcade to support data processing and customization
