Job summary

Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin, seeks a faculty member to grow a specialty-focused urology practice within UT Health Austin and UT Medicine. The team currently includes specialists in minimally invasive surgery, oncology, and male sexual health.

The ideal candidate will lead genitourinary reconstruction efforts, collaborate across surgical services, and contribute to teaching and research for medical students and residents

Qualifications

• Medical degree from an accredited medical school is required.
• Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment).
• Current ABU-board certification or eligible for certification by passing the Qualifying Examination.
• Fellowship training in genitourinary reconstruction is required.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a clinical content expert on genitourinary reconstruction at UT Health Austin as part of UT Medicine at the University of Texas.
• Evolve and expand the genitourinary reconstruction program within Dell Medical School’s Health Transformation Building and other sites of service.
• Develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas.
• Assist in the training and management of the clinical team.
• Participate in strategic planning and other efforts tied to the growth of the genitourinary reconstruction practice.
• Assist in creating a data and evaluation infrastructure for regularly assessing clinical quality and costs; train and mentor students and residents.
• Participate in curriculum development for Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education related to genitourinary reconstruction.
• Foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry within the multidisciplinary team.
• Collaborate with other UT Austin schools on multidisciplinary, value-based care models.
• Actively participate in departmental policies.

The Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care is comprised of faculty in broad specialties (anesthesiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, emergency medicine, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology) with a focus on delivering outstanding care to the community.

About the position

The faculty member will be an integral part of the rapidly expanding urology practice at UT Health Austin, a part of UT Medicine, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School. The current urologic service is composed of two specialists in minimally invasive surgery / endourology, two urologist oncologists and one Male Sexual Health urologist.

The individual should have interest in developing an ambitious specialty-focused urology practice in which un-insured, under-insured patients, and fully insured patients all receive care in the same clinic. We see referrals from other urologists locally and regionally. Additionally, the applicant should have an interest in multidisciplinary complex pelvic reconstruction, as our primary inpatient facility is home to plastic surgeons, colorectal surgeons and gynecologists who collaborate with urologists in care of patients with challenging reconstruction needs. Outpatient surgery is performed in the UT Heath Austin Ambulatory Surgery Center, a new state-of-the art facility.

With regards to research, opportunities abound for collaborative research with faculty at The University of Texas at Austin. With regards to teaching, medical students are frequently assigned to our service, and we host a urologic resident from the military program in San Antonio year-round.

Essential Functions

• Assist in the creation of a data and evaluation infrastructure for regularly assessing the clinical quality and cost outcomes for patients with genitourinary reconstruction needs.
  Train and mentor medical students and residents on new models of care and clinical practice.
• Participate in the development and implementation of Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education curricula related to evaluation and management of genitourinary reconstruction.
• Develop and foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry in conjunction with trainees and researchers within the multidisciplinary team.
• Collaborate with other schools at The University of Texas at Austin on multidisciplinary, value-based care models
• Actively participate in the academic department by all required departmental policies.

Required Qualifications:

• Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
• Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment);
• Current Board certification by the American Board of Urology, or eligible for certification by having passed the Qualifying Examination
• Fellowship training in genitourinary reconstruction.
• Eligible for appointment as an Assistant, Associate or full Professor rank in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
