Job Summary:


The Division of Pediatric Medical Genetics has an immediate opening for a Genetic CounselorAssistant ( GCA ), in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine. This position is part of the patient through-put team and supports the various providers in Medical Genetics, including geneticist, genetic counselors and other clinicians with administrative functions, including triaging and prepping incoming cases for geneticist and genetic counselor review. The position will include patient-facing time, including consenting for genetic testing and obtaining samples (cheek swabs) for these tests. Additional responsibilities include ordering genetic testing, entering patient data into the tracking database, coordinating and scheduling appointments, updating patients’ electronic medical records, routing telephone calls, assisting with creation of educational materials and patient letters, participating in team meetings and performance/quality improvement projects, and other duties assigned.


This position is posted at multiple job levels. Each level has distinct qualifications, responsibilities, which will be evaluated during the selection process. Final placement, including the associated pay rate, will be determined based on business needs and budget considerations.

Responsibilities


Essential Functions:



  • Reviews referrals and triages patients for appropriateness of genetic services.

  • Obtains and abstracts medical records in for clinical appointments.

  • Assists with patient chart reviews and case preparation for genetic counselors and other clinicians, as directed.

  • Obtains informed consent for genetic testing.

  • Assists in coordinating genetic testing for family members, including both diagnostic and research-related genetic testing.

  • Obtains patient samples, including cheek swabs, for genetic testing.

  • Coordinates and researches insurance coverage and authorization requirements for genetic testing.

  • Enters patient visit and genetic testing data into the patient tracking database.

  • Assists in preparing letters of medical necessity under the guidance of a genetic counselor.

  • Provides patients and families with updates regarding insurance authorizations, coverage decisions, and status of testing.

  • Assists with appointment scheduling and responds to phone inquiries related to genetic services.

  • Assists in preparing and distributing patient follow-up correspondence regarding genetic testing results.

  • Composes and prepares correspondence, newsletters, presentations, and other program materials as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Program Assistant, I
