Job summary

Penn Medicine's CPUP OB-GYN Maternal Fetal Medicine unit seeks a Genetic Counselor 1 to deliver genetic counseling and coordinate patient care in a per diem role at 3400 Spruce Street, Philadelphia.

Responsibilities include case preparation, history collection, risk assessment, testing discussions, result interpretation, psychosocial support, and meticulous documentation. Licensing must be completed within 180 days; experience in academic health care and EPIC EMR familiarity are valued.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in a genetic counseling program (ACGC accredited).
• 1+ years of effective clinical communication to support continuity of care.
• 1 year of clinical genetic counseling experience or rotation experience.
• Experience in an academic health care setting is required.
• Familiarity with EPIC EMR or equivalent systems.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for cases by gathering relevant medical records and ensuring access.
• Collect patient history and construct pedigrees using proper terminology.
• Perform genetic risk assessment and explain testing options to patients.
• Interpret test results and communicate findings to patients and clinicians.
• Provide psychosocial counseling and document clinical encounters.
• Write clinic notes, letters, and other communications.
• Collaborate with supervising physicians and care teams.
• Identify areas for improvement within the clinic.

Summary:

• The Genetic Counselor 1 will provide genetic counseling services using basic skills and competencies and provide care coordination to patients in the practice. He or she will apply knowledge and skills to provide patient care, with assistance from senior team members, as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare for cases by identifying relevant medical records and ensuring that these are obtained
• Collect and evaluate patient medical history, construct a pedigree using appropriate nomenclature
• Perform comprehensive genetic risk assessment, explain natural history of diagnosis, explain relevant genetic factors, explain available testing and facilitate testing
• Interpret genetic test results and communicate to patients and other healthcare professionals.
• Perform psychosocial assessment and provide counseling
• Document clinical encounter
• write clinic notes, physician letters, patient letters, and other communications
• Collaborate with supervising physicians/providers and other care providers
• Begin to recognize areas for improvement within the clinic

Credentials:

• Application for Genetic Counseling license must be completed within 30 days of start date as required by the state in which patients will be seen. Barring any circumstances outside of the incumbents control the license must be in place by completion of the 180 day probationary period. Failure to obtain license by the end of the 180-day introductory period will result in termination.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• Master Degree- ACGC accredited genetic counseling training program (Required)
• 1+ years demonstrated effective communication within a clinical setting to contribute to continuity of care (Required)
• 1 year clinical genetic counseling experience or relevant clinical rotation experience (Required)
• Experience working within an academic health care setting (Required)
• Familiarity with an electronic medical record systems comparable in complexity currently utilized EPIC EM (Required)
