Job summary

Home Power Systems, part of TurnPoint Services, seeks a Generator Technician to perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on standby generators and related electrical systems across New York. You will ensure code-compliant performance and deliver top-quality customer service.

The role requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work with diagnostic equipment. A valid driver's license and ability to lift 70+ lbs are needed.

Qualifications

• Must have a full set of personal hand tools.
• Knowledge of NEC Code is a plus.
• Generator knowledge is a plus (training available).
• Generator training or certification is a huge plus.
• Auto mechanic knowledge is a plus.
• Minimum 1 year of experience on gas engines, electrical wiring, or similar mechanical systems.
• Prior experience with generator installation, maintenance, or repair preferred.
• Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical troubleshooting principles.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance, inspections, oil changes, and repairs on standby generators and related equipment.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical generator issues using diagnostic and testing equipment.
• Troubleshoot wiring, control panels, voltage regulators, and ATS during repairs.
• Explain issues to customers and educate on operation and maintenance schedules.
• Respond to warranty repairs and participate in after-hours on-call rotation (~6 weeks).
• Deliver exceptional customer service and maintain professional conduct on job sites.
• Safely use hand and power tools to complete work.
• Transport generator parts and equipment using company vehicle.
• Ensure work complies with electrical/building codes and safety standards.
• Complete accurate service reports and documentation.
• Maintain a clean, organized work environment.

Role Overview

The Generator Technician is responsible for performing scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on standby generators and associated electrical systems. This role requires a mechanically inclined and detail-oriented professional who takes pride in delivering top-quality customer service. The ideal candidate ensures reliable, safe, and code-compliant generator performance for every client.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance, inspections, oil changes, and repairs on automatic standby generators and related equipment.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical generator issues using appropriate diagnostic and testing equipment.
• Perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs involving wiring, control panels, voltage regulators, and automatic transfer switches (ATS).
• Explain generator issues to customers, recommend repair options, and educate them on proper operation and maintenance schedules.
• Respond to warranty repairs and participate in the after-hours emergency on-call rotation, approximately once every six weeks.
• Deliver exceptional customer service and represent the company professionally on every job site.
• Safely use hand and power tools to complete mechanical and electrical service work.
• Transport generator parts, tools, and equipment using a company-provided vehicle.
• Ensure all work complies with applicable electrical and building codes, manufacturer specifications, and company safety standards.
• Complete accurate service reports, work orders, and required documentation.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Requirements

• Must have a full set of personal hand tools
• Knowledge of NEC Code a plus
• Generator knowledge is a PLUS (generator training is available)
• Generator training or certification a HUGE PLUS.
• Auto mechanic or auto knowledge a PLUS
• Must haave a minimum of 1 year of experience working on gas engines, electrical wiring, or similar mechanical systems.
• Prior experience with generator installation, maintenance, or repair is highly preferred.
• Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical troubleshooting principles.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Proven problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
• Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
• Familiarity with tools, testing instruments, and diagnostic equipment used in generator service.
• Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift 70+ lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
• Preferred Skills & Certifications (a plus, not required)
• Experience with major generator brands such as Generac, Kohler, Cummins, or CAT is a plus!
• Familiarity with ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) wiring and programming.

USD $20.00 - USD $25.00 /Hr.
