Job Details

The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician (MLS/MLT) performs and monitors various medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies. The MLS/MLT complies with regulatory requirements by following established procedures and protocols to maintain a safe laboratory environment and meet accreditation standards. The MLS/MLT works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Essential Functions

• Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with Jefferson's values.
• Properly process specimens following established protocols, including patient identification and labelling. May require specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations.
• Determine acceptability of specimens through visual inspection, recognizing acceptable QC results, and documenting unacceptable specimens as per policy. Communicate specimen requirements and report critical values to appropriate personnel.
• Complete reports, maintain records, and verify test data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Operate, monitor, clean, calibrate, and maintain analytical equipment. Troubleshoot malfunctions and keep accurate maintenance records.
• Follow quality control policies to ensure result accuracy. Recognize factors affecting measurements and document QC results, participating in proficiency testing.
• Maintain clinical competency annually and participate in educational in-services for regulatory compliance.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including technical training of other technicians and students, and specimen collection as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's Degree in a related Science field is required, preferably from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program or Military Medical Laboratory training. Prior laboratory training or student experience accepted. ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
