Job description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct service in the form of counseling individuals, couples, families and groups on matters pertaining to family dynamics, parent-child interaction, couples communication, stress reduction and adjustment to military lifestyle. The Counselor/Generalist position also requires the ability to provide and facilitate psycho-educational training programs.

TIER 1 salary range - $59,021 - $62,828
TIER II salary range - $71,410 - $76,016

Duties

The candidate will need the ability to present sensitive, and at times controversial, information to groups of people in a clear, concise manner and the ability to modify programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the active duty military community.

Clinical counseling includes the psychosocial assessment of individuals, development of treatment plans, treatment delivery and appropriate referral for active-duty military members and their families. In addition to clinical counseling duties, the Navy Family Advocacy Program requires ability to provide case management services, which include the identification and reporting of allegations of child and spouse abuse. The ability to assess risk and prepare safety plans is required. The candidate must be able to complete psychosocial assessments and treatment plans, provide treatment or make appropriate referral. The position requires knowledge of intensive psychosocial services and a wide range of skills (casework, group work, individual and family therapy). Both clinical and Family Advocacy Cases may involve difficult and complex family problems, i.e., violence or mental health issues.Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on occasion a 24-hour on call rotation. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate possess the following:
  • The candidate should have sufficient knowledge of the military lifestyle to be able to understand the specific demands of the military lifestyle, such as frequent separations, and high stress working environments that can impact individuals and families.
  • The candidate should have an understanding of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and ability to apply family systems, brief solution-focused therapy and diagnostic skill needed when interviewing clients.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of family violence treatment principles for victims and offenders.
  • The candidate must have at least two years of experience working in the field of child abuse and domestic abuse.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
  • TIER I - Clinicians without a state license will be considered Tier I and all case notes will be signed off by the Counseling and Advocacy Program Supervisor (CAPS) or another Tier III clinician until licensed. Unlicensed clinicians will be paid at the GS-9 equivalent rate.
  • TIER II - Once licensed, a credentialing/privileging request will be sent to CNIC for the Tier II level (those that who have been licensed less than two years). Once credentialed/privileged at the Tier II level, sign off all case notes by the CAPS or another Tier III will no longer be required. Licensed clinicians will be advance to the pay rate equivalent to a GS-11.
