Salary Range:

General Transportation Tech I (A16) : $3,409.83 - $5,094.16

General Transportation Tech II (A17) : $3,581.33- $5,372.41

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and
    signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various
    required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Duties (additional to General Transportation Technician I):

  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large
    dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Technician I and II Education: None in formal education

General Transportation Technician II Experience: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Follow verbal and written instructions

General Transportation Technician II (in addition to General Transportation Tech I):

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

General Transportation Technician I and II:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment forsafetyimpactpositions.This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions.
