Employment Status: Full time Shift: Day (United States of America) Facility: 3 Riverside Cir - Roanoke

Carilion Clinic is seeking a skilled and collaborative Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our General Surgery team. This APP will work as an integral member of a busy surgical practice supporting a team of 13 general surgeons and providing high-quality, patient-centered care across the surgical continuum. Position Overview The General Surgery APP will partner closely with surgeons, nursing staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team to support efficient, coordinated care for general surgery patients. The position offers a four-day workweek consisting of four 10-hour shifts, providing a balance of meaningful clinical responsibility, professional collaboration, and schedule flexibility. The ideal candidate is an APP who thrives in a team-based environment, communicates effectively, demonstrates sound clinical judgment, and is comfortable managing the needs of a diverse general surgery patient population.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive care for general surgery patients in collaboration with the general surgeons.
  • Perform patient evaluations, histories and physical examinations, and develop appropriate assessment and treatment plans.
  • Participate in preoperative and postoperative patient management.
  • Evaluate postoperative concerns, identify complications, and coordinate care with the surgical team.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory studies, imaging, and other diagnostic testing within scope of practice.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, recovery, wound care, medications, and follow-up.
  • Assist with clinical procedures within training, credentialing, and scope of practice.
  • Facilitate timely communication among surgeons, nursing teams, consultants, and other members of the care team.
  • Support continuity of care, patient throughput, and timely follow-up for the General Surgery service.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and practice-efficiency initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Surgical, acute care, or general surgery experience preferred; highly motivated candidates with relevant clinical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a large, collaborative surgical team.
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner program or an accredited Physician Assistant program required.
Experience
  • 1 year of clinical experience preferred. Additional experience may be required based on specialty.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Nurse Practitioners must also hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
  • Must be eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with state regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Life Support
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required as appropriate to the position.
Other Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Board of Medicine or Nursing, and applicable certifying bodies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer systems required.
Compensation Range

Compensation Range: $107,993.60 - $172,785.60.

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
