Job summary

IES Communications seeks a General Superintendent to lead large, complex telecom projects, ensuring safety, on-time delivery, and strong profitability. You will manage staff, budgets, timelines and customer relations across project life cycles.

The role requires guiding teams, enforcing standards, optimizing processes, and driving continuous improvement while maintaining a high safety culture and quality control.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years of supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years as a Lead Communications Technician or similar.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in telecommunications or related field.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, MS Project).
  • Must be able to read blueprints and project documents.

General Superintendent - Position Summary

The General Superintendent is responsible for the overall leadership, execution, and financial performance of large and complex projects. This role serves as the primary operational leader, ensuring all work is completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with company and customer requirements. The General Superintendent oversees project staff, customer relationships, project profitability, quality control, scheduling, and operational processes while driving continuous improvement and maintaining a strong safety culture.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, supervise, and develop project personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide recommendations for promotions and compensation adjustments.
  • Manage employee relations issues in accordance with company policies.
  • Lead operations meetings, training sessions, and workforce development initiatives.
Project & Operations Management
  • Oversee all phases of project execution from planning through completion.
  • Manage staffing levels, workload distribution, and project resources.
  • Ensure projects are completed on schedule and meet customer expectations.
  • Monitor productivity, installation progress, and project performance.
Financial Management
  • Maintain project profitability and achieve financial targets.
  • Review job cost reporting, invoicing, collections, and financial documentation.
  • Ensure accurate completion of timesheets, work orders, change orders, material transfers, and closeout documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with project budgets and financial controls.
Customer Relations
  • Serve as the senior operational liaison between the company and customer.
  • Attend customer, construction, and facility meetings as required.
  • Address customer concerns and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
Quality & Technical Oversight
  • Perform quality inspections and job-site walkthroughs.
  • Ensure installation quality and prevent service interruptions.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and provide resolution guidance.
  • Review and maintain red-lined as-built drawings and project documentation.
Process Improvement & Safety
  • Evaluate and improve operational processes including estimating, scheduling, purchasing, warehousing, invoicing, and reporting.
  • Partner with training and safety teams to ensure compliance with company standards.
  • Promote and enforce safety as the highest priority.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Regular attendance is mandatory
  • The General Superintendent must be self-motivated, positive in approach, and convey an appropriate professional image.
  • The General Superintendent must promote the Company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients and business partners.
  • The General Superintendent must possess proven problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively read, write and give oral presentation(s).
  • The General Superintendent must also have excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop branch and job processes and best practices.
  • The General Superintendent must have proven high skill level to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including but not limited to, specifications, reporting and quality requirements.
  • The General Superintendent must be able to travel within the branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.
  • The General Superintendent must possess the ability to learn and teach the Company and customer project management systems.
  • The General Superintendent must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and walk very large job sites regularly.
  • The General Superintendent must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.

Education, Certification, License, And Skill Requirements

  • Prefer a minimum of five (5) years’ experience of supervisory or managerial experience.
  • The General Superintendent must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Lead Communications Technician or similar position.
  • The General Superintendent must also have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in telecommunications or a related technical or construction field.
  • Must be proficient with a computer and be skilled with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and MS Project).
  • Must meet Company minimum driving standards.
  • The General Superintendent Must have demonstrated verifiable ability to define a project, create a project scope of work, create an estimate, develop detailed associated tasks and manage these to final completion and customer turnover.
  • Must be able to use the following trade Tools: punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX, butt set, volt-ohmmeter, 4-pair continuity tester and 5-gang punch tool.
