Job description

The University of New Mexico is seeking a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist to join the Division of Surgical Oncology as an Open Rank faculty member (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). This position focuses on complex general surgical oncology with primary clinical responsibilities in melanoma, sarcoma, and gastrointestinal (GI) oncology. New fellowship graduates are encouraged to apply. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The University of New Mexico Hospital and the UNM School of Medicine serve as the primary tertiary and quaternary referral center for New Mexico and the surrounding region, caring for a population of over 2 million people. The Division of Surgical Oncology is the state’s primary referral center for the full spectrum of surgical oncology, including melanoma, sarcoma, HIPEC/peritoneal surface malignancies, gastrointestinal tumors, breast cancer, and hepatopancreaticobiliary disease, within an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that supports an ACGME-accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) fellowship. The UNM Health Sciences Center (UNM-HSC) is home to one of only 58 NCI–designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. UNM is also a recipient of an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which accelerates laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments.

Outpatient services are based at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art facility with excellent clinic space and resources for patient care and clinical research. Inpatient care is provided at University of New Mexico Hospital, which opened a new inpatient tower in October 2025 featuring modern intensive care units and 18 new operating suites plus 2 hybrid rooms.

Albuquerque offers excellent year-round weather, ready access to outdoors (the Sandia Mountain wilderness is 20 minutes from campus), a vibrant food and arts scene, and proximity to Santa Fe (approximately one hour). The culture of New Mexico is deeply intertwined with its Native American heritage, including 19 pueblos, each with its own distinct history and traditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Medical Doctor or equivalent
• Board certified or board eligible in General Surgery
• Graduate of an accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) fellowship (or equivalent)
• Eligible for medical licensure in New Mexico
• Eligible to work in the United States
• Qualified for faculty appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level

Preferred Qualifications:

• Clinical expertise or strong interest in melanoma, sarcoma, and GI surgical oncology
• Commitment to teaching residents, fellows, and medical students
• Interest in clinical research, clinical trials, or quality improvement
• Demonstrated commitment to understanding the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the university’s mission to serve local and global communities
