POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION: General Music Teacher

POSITION TYPE: Certified – Teacher Contract

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid Ohio teacher’s certificate validated for music K-12.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university with specific emphasis in music education.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching as a general music teacher.
  • Appropriate recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

CONTRACT WORK DAYS: 185 days

RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrate a positive ability to work harmoniously with others and exhibit an ability to discover and develop the potential of all students assigned to general music.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan and implement a sequential program of general music learning activities as set forth in the Solon City Schools General Instrumental and Vocal Music Course of Study, Grades K-12.
  • Establish, in cooperation with the principal, a schedule of instructional activities for each school assigned.
  • Give class instruction in vocal music that will incorporate various methods and philosophies of music education.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers.
  • Select, edit and rearrange music to conform to the ability of the pupils.
  • Organize and present musical programs for school and community.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Encourage pupils to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
  • Maintain surveillance over school-owned music and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals and performances.
  • Evaluate and prepare progress reports on students’ growth. Prepare and present such criteria for evaluation.
  • As necessary, confer with parents on the music program and individual progress in the program.
  • Participate in selection of appropriate music, books and instrumental aids to enhance learning.
  • Requisition materials, supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service programs provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Be responsible for supervision of students in all areas of the building or grounds.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal may assign.
