  • Base pay range: $50,425.00/year
Job Description

This position is not in the Classified Service of New York State but is covered under New York State Military Law. Selected candidates will lose their seniority within the Civil Service, exempting them from promotional exams.

Under supervision, a General Mechanic performs journey-level work in trades related to repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Responsibilities include supervising others, performing skilled trades, and ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Design, plan, and execute trades projects based on descriptions or sketches.
  • Inspect work for compliance, quality, and safety.
  • Assist in determining maintenance needs and recommend repairs.
  • Prepare plans, review work requests, and determine materials needed.
  • Provide training and supervision to staff, and perform routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform grounds maintenance and assist with facility upkeep.
  • Complete documentation and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of full-time experience in a skilled trade, equivalent to an apprenticeship.
  • Or completion of a recognized trade apprenticeship or technical training.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license for NY State; may require military driver’s license.
  • Ability to work at heights, lift heavy objects (50+ lbs), and in confined spaces.
  • Proficiency with relevant software (Microsoft Office, SFS, SLMS).
  • Must pass background checks and obtain necessary clearances.
Additional Information

Current start rate: $50,425; Job rate: $61,548. This is a full-time, entry-level position in government administration, with overtime and travel required. Candidate must maintain standards per agency and NGB regulations.
